July 6, 2008 “Laughing at Ourselves: America's Holy Fool" Rev. Kit Ketcham
We Unitarian Universalists have given the world a lot to laugh about over the centuries since we became a serious religious path. But the Fool is a notable character in world literature and in real life. Do the many jokes about UUs say anything serious about us? And can we laugh at ourselves? Let's consider the role of the Holy Fool in American religious life.
Rev. Kit is a Pacific Northwest native who repatriated to her homeland in 1999 after living for 34 years in Colorado. She served Wy'east UU Congregation in Portland area, and the Vashon Island UU Fellowship; She now serves the UU Congregation of Whidbey Island. She has an adult son who lives in Reno with his family and three cats!
July 13, 2008 “Living in Theological Ambiguity But Believing in Intelligent Design” Keo Capestany, member of the congregation.
When we think about evil only Auschwitz, 9-11 or huge national catastrophe come to mind. The problem of a benevolent creator designing damaging insects is ignored. Even though mosquitoes have killed more humans than all wars in recorded history combined. This sermon is not a call to arms in the style of the so called new atheists, but an appeal for a theology in line with our principles, that considers our intellectual limitations while insisting in our duty to mitigate evil.
July 20, 2008 “I believe in Music!”
A service of musical sharings from our members and friends. Do you have a musical piece you would be willing to share? One that particularly speaks to your beliefs, or that moves your soul and spirit? Christian is a member of our congregation. He is a physician and Clinical Fellow of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington & Harborview Medical Centers. In this sermon Christian will reflect on his experience of calling and passion for his work in Tanzania, where he addressed the AIDS epidemic.

The Rev. Connie Yost is an ordained Unitarian Universalist Community Minister in Salem, Oregon. She is a hospice chaplain and spiritual director and serves on the Board of the UU Society for Community Ministry. Connie recently relocated to Salem from the Los Angeles area, where she founded EarthWorks Community Farm, a job training and leadership development program for at-risk high school youth who are employed to help grow and sell organic produce to the low-income community.
